Variations on the 'local' theme

One suggestion for City Foods - establishing a physical storefront is a big challenge. Yet, there is access available to natural, local (if available) foods through cooperation with existing organizations like The People's Elbow Food Buying Club. A cooperative effort to provide transportation would be the main object for those living downtown without access to a vehicle.

"The People's Elbow is a cooperative food buying club serving Greater Lafayette, Indiana. We value affordable, natural whole foods and products as well as locally-produced organic foods. New members are welcome."

T.P.E. requires no storefront - bulk deliveries are made periodically with private residences as distribution points.

As a start-up producer in Tippecanoe County (about 12 miles SW of Lafayette) of naturally-grown beans & grains,

I am in contact with the group with an aim to become a local supplier of a variety of dried beans, corn, popcorn, wheat and buckwheat flour.

I should be able to supply about 125 lb./mo of a variety of edible beans as well as a similar quantity of dried grains. The emphasis on dried, non-perishable items will allow McMillin Farm to be a year round supplier of these items.

I am open to comments, questions, feedback concerning the plans for the '09 season.

I just read about Kiersten Wise, a new faculty person in Purdue's Botany Department. She comes from North Dakota where she worked in extension with Chick Pea growers.

She might be a ready resource in helping you set up your dry bean production operation.

A local supply of chick pea and adzuki beans would be just fantastic!
